For centuries, people across the planet have looked to the sky to harvest the free falling resource of rain. Cisterns and other rain harvesting systems are widely used in Europe, the Bahamas, Australia, India, and in countless other parts of the globe—often as the sole source for meeting day-to-day water needs.

Recycled or reclaimed water is wastewater that has been treated to such a high level that it can be used safely and effectively for nondrinking purposes. Reuse applications include agricultural and landscape irrigation, industrial processes, toilet flushing or replenishing a groundwater basin.

Amid growing water shortages, rainwater harvesting is a practical, ecological solution to help fill the gap. Rainwater catchment systems capture storm water runoff and store it for use in irrigation, flushing toilets, washing clothes and other non-potable water demands. With additional filtration and processing, the water can be purified for use as everyday drinking water.

Catch, treat, store and use.
A typical rainwater collection system has these components:

• Catchment surface (typically a roof of a house)
• Method of conveying the water (gutters, downspouts and piping)
• Filtering device (particle filtration of 20-1 micron filters)
• Disinfection system (ultraviolet, ozone or chlorine used for producing potable water)
• Neutralizing filter (rainwater’s corrosive 5-6 pH needs to be neutralized so it doesn’t corrode copper piping)
• Storage tank or cistern (typically 10,000-30,000 gallon capacity)
• Distribution system (based on end use)
