Desalination
Tapping the ocean to make saltwater drinkable.

Island and coastal communities that have depleted or limited access to traditional ground and/or surface water supplies need to look no farther than the vast ocean that laps against their shores for a ready solution.

Desalination is a process the removes the salt from saltwater to produce drinkable water. There are two common techniques for the desalination of water: thermal techniques such as distillation and membrane techniques such as reverse osmosis.

The older distillation method, shown in the diagram, mimics the natural process of the water cycle where heat energy turns water into water vapor which is then cooled and condensed into pure water. Distillation has a higher operating cost than membrane methods because of the energy load required for boiling the water into steam.

Desalination using seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) membrane technology is a more advanced processing method that offers high energy efficiency and low environmental impact. Learn more.
